I build my courses from scratch and unlike most who teach university level courses, I do not like to utilize free materials (e.g. lectures, test questions, writing and discussion prompts) disseminated through textbooks I adopt for my classes. It is certainly labor-intensive for me but it is also easier to frame material with my own words and I always develop a visual memory from this process. I can point a student to the exact page and paragraph when they have a question.
In 2015 I was awarded the University of Maryland’s “Outstanding Instructor Award” for the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.
I currently teach Sociology 101: Introduction to Sociology and Sociology 331: Juvenile Delinquency at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Copies of syllabi available upon request. Office hours by appointment only.
